WORK to install a lift bridge as part of efforts to restore an historic canal route in Lichfield is set to get underway.

The equipment will begin to be constructed on the stretch of the Lichfield Canal between Longbridge Road and Tamworth Road from tomorrow (30th June).

As the restored waterway will cut across a public right of way, the lift bridge will ensure that once the section of canal has water once more – expected to be by the end of 2026 – pedestrians will still be able to use the route.

Funding for the project was made possible after an appeal in 2022 saw £39,000 raised.

Derek Lord, planning and technical trustee at Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, said:

> “This lift bridge represents more than just a crossing – it’s a symbol of the progress we’re making in bringing this canal back to life.
>
> “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who donated through the Big Give appeal, helping us to make this lift bridge a reality.
>
> “We’d also like to thank local residents for their patience during the construction phase. We recognise there may be some temporary disruption, and we’re working hard to keep this to a minimum.”
