A group of councillors and officers have been given a preview of the new developments at Whittington Barracks.
They were given a tour of the works on the new Defence Medical Services (DMS) facility.
The new centre will have 44 classrooms, a learning centre, medical library, lecture theatre and accomodation block for 820 personnel.
Once complete, the £138 million facility will deliver 30,000 training days across 2,000 medical courses each year and will see the population on the base rise to around 1,400 by March 2014.
Cllr Bernard Derrick said: “The tour was fascinating and gave us a chance to see how much progress has been made on this exciting facility. Once the project is complete and in operation, it will bring in 1,000 extra medical personnel to the district, and we look forward to giving them a warm welcome in the future.”
