A Barton-under-Needwood student has handed over more than £1,000 to a local charity in memory of her mother.
Nazish Begum, 17, was determined to raise funds for the maternity unit at Queen’s Hospital in Burton.
A total of £1,080 was raised in memory of Tahira Begum who died in 2009 after complications with her pregnancy.

The John Taylor High School student invited hospital staff to talk to class-mates before embarking on her year-long fundraising drive.
“I decided to raise money for the antenatal unit in order to be able to give something back to the ward where my mum spent the last week of her life,” Nazish explained.
“I have been raising money for the past year and I think that it has helped me with my grieving process.
“The support that I have had from my family and closest friends has been incredible.
“My aim was £1000 and it’s been a busy 12 months of raffles, lucky dips and cake sales, but it has definitely been worth it and I am glad that it will go to a good use by improving facilities for women like my mother.”
The money will be used to buy three special rocking chairs, including one for the new birthing pool which will open in July.
Helen Hurst, manager of the hospital’s delivery suite, added: “What Nazish has done is absolutely fantastic and to raise as much as she has will make a big difference to the ladies coming here for their deliveries.”
