A Lichfield school has bid farewell to a teacher who has spent more than 25 years improving the lives of pupils with dyslexia.

Jennifer Shakespeare is an English teacher at Maple Hayes Dyslexia School and the longest-serving member of staff.

But she is now hanging up her marking pen after coordinating her final Christmas play, which will be performed on the last day of term.

She said: “I leave here with so many brilliant memories and so much pride for the pupils I have encountered.

“It’s a fantastic place to work, it’s like a great big family here. As we only have 120 pupils, I’ve taught them all and know them all by name.

“I’m going to miss this place terribly, but I’ll still pop back and say hello when I get the chance.”

She was showered with gifts ahead of her departure.

Dr Daryl Brown, the school’s headteacher, said: “The school simply wouldn’t be what it is today without Jennifer’s involvement.

“She’s been with us from the start and has been a driving force behind the literacy programmes that have enabled hundreds of pupils with dyslexia to reach their full academic potential.

“I speak on behalf of the whole school when I say she will be sorely missed.”
