Youngsters are being invited to audition for Lichfield Cathedral’s choir.
The recruitment has been described as an “amazing opportunity” for boy and girl choristers by the cathedral’s director of music.
Cathy Lamb – who holds the post along with her husband Ben – said: “The boy and girl choristers provide the top line voices and are joined by the professional gentlemen singers who provide the Alto, Tenor and Bass harmony parts.
“This is an amazing opportunity to join a choral foundation that stretches back more than 700 years.”
Boys must be aged between seven and 11 and girls between nine and 12. Auditions will take place on June 6.
All choristers attend Lichfield Cathedral School with the aid of choral scholarships. For the first time, boys are now allowed to attend as day pupils, as the requirement to board at the school has been removed.
Ben Lamb added: “The musical education provided for choristers is unparalleled.
“There are countless opportunities for performance during daily services, plus concerts and events across the Diocese.
“The Cathedral Choir regularly takes part in broadcasts on television and radio and in CD recordings, and all the members enjoy sharing their love of music with people across the world during international tours.
“This is a unique opportunity to receive a first-class academic education and develop vocal, instrumental and music theory skills in a professional environment.
“Enthusiasm, intelligence and potential are the key ingredients to becoming a chorister. Boys and girls are not expected to have a fully developed voice, nor must they have had previous training or singing experience.”
The new choristers will start in September 2015.
Cathy added: “A passion for music and the ability to sing back a note played on a piano are the building blocks of a successful career as a chorister.”
