A BURNTWOOD councillor has called for action to tackle “alarming” speeding on a local route.
Cllr Andrew Clissett’s comments come after he joined local representatives on Stables Way in the town.
Despite being a 30mph zone, the Reform UK councillor for Burntwood North at Staffordshire County Council, said many drivers were treating it “like a half-mile drag strip”.
He said:
“I’ve been out on Stables Way with the the Safer Roads Partnership and Staffordshire Police following the concerns many residents have raised with me about speeding.
“And I’ll be frank – what we saw at the roadside was alarming. Some drivers are still treating this road like a half-mile drag strip and not a 30mph route where people live, walk and drive every day.”
Cllr Clissett said he was keen to see long-term solutions to the issue of speeding on the stretch of road.
“Speed indicator devices installed here previously, but they were later removed. However, the issue is that the concern hasn’t gone away.
“We’re still seeing mobile speed enforcement returning to the same locations along this stretch, which tells you everything you need to know about how persistent the issue is.
“The ‘Think Deer’ signs are there for a reason and some motorists continue to ignore the warnings.
“This road needs more than occasional enforcement. We need a proper, joined-up approach that actually changes driver behaviour, better speed reminders, improved signage and longer-term measures that make the limit stick.”

There is speeding all over the area Hopwas Hill on the fringe of the area one example. Action, the camera van once ever 6 months
HGVs a free run.
No traffic police dedicated to road safety. WHY NOT.
It could be self funded, in fact profit making the cash back into road safety
The councillor needs to review the speeding cars in Burntwood generally, on particular around Morrissons, Aldi, cannock road where it is more built up and a lot more pedestrians and children walking to school.
There must be a councillor or a person who is important living around that road! I must say that Bridge cross road in Burntwood is the one that should be monitored and have working speed cameras on. A school route, and a residential area. No way is stables way as bad for speeding drivers. Get it sorted, do what needs to be done and make it happen before someone gets hurt or killed.
I totally agree with Cllr Clissett in regards to the brainless morons who speed on this stretch of road without any regard to other law abiding motorists. These boneheads should have their cars taken off them then be forced to watch them being crushed at the local scrap yard before being handed a huge fine and driving ban or if necessary a jail sentence as a deterrent to the other idiots of society . At the moment the roads are getting more and more dangerous with excessive speeding, drink/ drug driving, impatience, lack of respect and the fear of the consequences of awful driving.
Start taking care of what belongs to you and collecting your rubbish bins on time, stop robbing the residents of Burntwood of council tax.
@Mac77 – There are several Labour Town and District councillors who live close to that road, and until last year, one that live right on it. And speeding down there is one of the issues they have repeatedly raised. Two years ago, they successfully lobbied to have that road added to the primary gritting route as well.
County Councillor, Janet Higgins, invited local parish councils that cover her division to nominate one road in their area where speeding is a concern to their community as part of an initiative with the Safer Roads Partnership. No other County Councillor covering Burntwood did.
When I followed up a constituent’s complaint about speeding in Stablers Way in April last year last year the Safer Roads Partnership replied (extract):
“…the frequency that mobile enforcement sites are visited is based on the analysis of the road safety risk, this takes into consideration personal injury collisions and the general speed of traffic at the location to ensure enforcement is targeted and proportionate.
The safety camera vans have visited this location [Stables Way] on 16 occasions over the last 12 months, resulting in 114 motorists receiving a notice of intended prosecution.”
