The Red Lion is due to re-open in early August after being given a makeover.

New landlady Chloe Turner explained: “It’s a property which oozes character and atmosphere and we’re in the process of transforming it into a traditional country pub with proper foodie credentials We’re sensitively re-designing the interior, covering over an existing courtyard and adding a decent kitchen and garden room.

“You’ll find cosy dining areas, open fires, bookcases and lots of honest old furniture without the blight of television, gaming machines or loud music.”

The new owners have also promised six cask ales and two scrumpy ciders on tap, as well as water and biscuits on offer for four-legged visitors.

“We still have a fair way to go before we open,” Chloe said. “Not least in recruiting some 30 front of house staff from the local area, but with good luck and a following wind, we hope to be open in the first week of August.”
