The 86-hectare site will become the trust’s 27th nature reserve across county and its fifth largest.

A volunteer work party has already been set up – meeting on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month – where volunteers will be carrying out work such as scrub clearance to make the site a more attractive place to visit.

Councillor Andy Smith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet member for leisure & parks, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to ensure the future of Gentleshaw Common.

“It’s such a fantastic local resource with its beautiful environment, home to rare wet and dry heathland habitats, with a large range of wildlife.”

The new agreement will not affect public access to the common.

Julian Woolford, Chief Executive of Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, said: “Gentleshaw is a jewel in the crown of heathland sites in Staffordshire and becomes one of our largest nature reserves.

“It is a well-loved area and we will continue to ensure that it is an amazing place to visit, where people can get away from it all and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

“We will also be working to make sure that Gentleshaw Common is the best it can be for the rare heathland wildlife that lives there.”

The work party will gather between 10.30am and 3pm, meeting at the parking area off Chorley Road at the end of Ogley Hay Road in Burntwood.
