But the striker made amends within minutes when he found the net to put his side ahead.
Gavin Hurren almost doubled the advantage when his long range effort was well saved.
Walsall Wood started the second period brightly, but found keeper Connor McCarthy in fine form.
The woodwork twice came to Lichfield’s rescue as the visitors piled on the pressure, but Tyron Smith settled the home side’s nerves as he gave them a two-goal lead.
Clarke had the chance to put the game beyond doubt, only to spurn a one-on-one opportunity.
Walsall Wood took full advantage of the let-off as Max Black struck with ten minutes left to give them late hope of a comeback.
But Lichfield held on to claim another notable cup scalp.
