Midwives are hoping to help mums to be, new mums, their partners and families across Lichfield and Burntwood give up smoking.
As part of National No Smoking Day, Good Hope Hospital is offering advice for those wanting to kick the habit and also give parents the chance to win baby hampers.
Carmel O’Gorman, spokesperson for smoking cessation in pregnancy at the hospital, said:
“Midwives are uniquely placed to help pregnant women quit at a time when huge changes are happening in their lives – and at a time when the incentive to quit is not only to benefit themselves and their partner, but also the unborn child.
“All our midwives understand that quitting smoking is very difficult. Right now, more than 15 per cent of pregnant women in the West Midlands are still smoking at the time of delivery, so we are keen to get the message out that we are here and ready to help.”
Visitors can drop in to see the midwives – who will be wearing themed t-shirts – between 10am and 4pm on March 9 in the hospital’s Fothergill building reception area on the ground floor.

This sounds like a really good idea. With all the anxieties that go with pregnancy, pregnant smokers and new mums can find it really difficult to stop, so it’s great that the midwives are helping them. I wish everybody involved good luck with this scheme.
