Empty shops at City Arcade

Empty shops in Lichfield city centre are set to be transformed as part of an art exhibition.

City Arcade will see contemporary pieces displayed at unoccupied units on Saturday (July 20) thanks to a project between Lichfield District Council and the Untitled Art Collective.

Ten artists will showcase as part of the City Artcade scheme, with works changing throughout the summer.

Celia Houghton, Lichfield District Council’s arts development officer, said: “Exhibiting at the City Arcade will allow a range of artists to show their work to a diverse audience that may not ordinarily go to a conventional gallery.

“It’s also a great way to use empty commercial units, so they attract people to them and create a buzz in the area.”

The project also includes a series of free arts activities for people of all ages that will take place at the City Arcade on six Saturdays over the school summer holiday, including July 20 and 27, and August 3, 17 and 31.

The first workshop, Linear Excursion, on Saturday between 10am and 4pm, will include drawing lines with tape and through sewing.

“We hope lots of people will come along to join in the free art activities that we’ll be running over the summer and to enjoy The City Artcade,” Celia added.

The City Arcade is located between Market Street and Bore Street.
