An Alrewas businesswoman has shown she’s a bright spark – by retraining as an electrician.

Susan Ward worked for a haulage company for 18 years before deciding to take her career in a new direction.

The 51-year-old admits she had an interest in practical skills after watching her father at work as a builder during her childhood.

And she has now reignited her interest by retraining and starting her own business carrying out domestic repairs.

“When I started telling people it was clear that everyone has small jobs that they need doing,” she explained. “I also realised being a female tradesperson – and being a bit older is a big selling point.

“I’m doing something very challenging so when customers tell me I’ve made a good job, that’s hugely satisfying

“With domestic work it matters so much that what you do is perfect because you’re working in someone’s home.

“It’s also physically good for me. I’m happiest when I’m doing something creative.

My other job is very sedentary – the busier you are the more you find yourself sitting still. I can feel that my legs and stomach muscles have had a good work out when I have spent a day up and down ladders.

“It’s wonderful to get exercise and achieve something satisfying at the same time.”
