AFTER a pre-season prolonged by the RFU's decision to delay the start of the new campaign, Burntwood open the season with what should have been the finale to last term's programme of fixtures.

They face Newcastle (Staffs) at 2pm tomorrow (19th September) in the final of the Staffs Intermediate Trophy at Stafford RUFC.

Fixture congestion caused the final to be held over so this will be the first competitive outing for both sides after a series of warm-up games.

No doubt both clubs will have changes to their line-ups, so Burntwood's league double over the Potteries' side last season won't necessarily be a reliable guide to the outcome.

One key change for Burntwood is the appointment of a new head coach. David Kirby replaces Steve Harris who has relocated to take up a role in Cornwall after a very successful stint at The Sportsway.

League fixtures start a week later with the 1sts at Willenhall and the 2nds at Essington.
