Art project continuing to transform empty Lichfield city centre shops

Empty Lichfield shops have continued to be transformed as part of a new project.

Untitled Art Collective has been giving the vacant units at City Arcade a makeover to help showcase the work of local artists and engage more people in creativity.

The City Artcade project has already seen various exhibits during the last two Saturdays, with each window offering a different type of work.

A spokesperson said: “Alongside the exhibition, we are also encouraging all people to get involved in free art activities on Saturdays throughout the summer.

“July 20 saw the Between The Lines installation evolve with the input of over 200 shoppers who used a range of brightly coloured tapes to convey their ideas. A parallel project offered a similar opportunity using a needle, thread and glue with visitors as young as four year old making detailed maps of the local area and beyond.

“Then, with Build It Up on Saturday (July 27), cardboard trees, branches and foliage evolved into a network of tunnels beneath the roots of an old cardboard oak tree, while a contrasting collaged cityscape emerged across the back wall of the shop, again with the considerable input of members of the public of all ages.

“Both events have demonstrated both the value of space for creativity and expression and the value of filling vacant shops in the heart of our city.

“Use of the empty units for free art activity Saturdays has also given people of all ages and abilities confidence to try something that may have been new to them.”

The City Arcade is located between Market Street and Bore Street. The remaining four free art activity Saturdays are planned to take place on August 3, 17, 24 and 31 from 10am to 4pm, with the theme Movement up next.
