Labour say they support the principle of pedestrianisation – but say proper consultation would take place over the way it is implemented in the city centre if they win control of Lichfield District Council.
An 18-month trial has seen restrictions introduced on Market Street, Conduit Street, Tamworth Street, Breadmarket Street and Bore Street.
The move has proved controversial after it also saw on-street blue badge parking bays moved to nearby car parks.
Cllr Steve Norman, leader of the Labour group at Lichfield District Council, said the implementation of the scheme would be something that would be reviewed if his party won control of the local authority on 4th May.
But he said the scheme would not necessarily be scrapped altogether.
“All the evidence in the UK and elsewhere is that pedestrianisation of town centres brings in extra footfall and increased retail sales – and Labour councillors support this principle.
“In the case of Lichfield city centre our view is that it has been handled badly, there has been poor consultation and communication, mixed messages, and bungled implementation.
“The whole scheme should be reviewed with a plan to properly consult those that would be affected by the plan, not just online and just before Christmas.
“If we are running the council after 4th May then we will carry out a major review. If not, we will still press for a review as we want to get this right for shoppers, visitors, businesses and blue badge holders.”

Cllr Colin Ball, who will be seeking re-election in the Curborough ward, said there needed to be full consideration of those impacted by the restrictions on vehicles.
“While we support the general idea of pedestrianisation, we are very concerned that the current plans risk excluding parts of the community from our city centre.
“The Conservative district council has failed to adequately consult with affect communities and so hasn’t put in place adequate provision for blue badge holders.
“A Labour council would work in true partnership with people affected by this to find a solution and provide better parking options for blue badge holders that will mean everyone is able to visit and enjoy our fantastic city.
“We will also discuss issues of concern for local businesses and look to ensure that these are addressed too.”
