Lichfield City FC could finally be back in action this weekend after the wintry conditions put pay to their last five fixtures.
Dean Gilbert’s men haven’t kicked a ball in anger since mid-December but, with the conditions set to improve before the weekend, are hopeful that their Staffordshire FA Challenge Quarter Final tie at Newcastle Town will take place as planned.
The City boss explained:
“It’s been very frustrating. We have done nothing now since December 12 but everyone is in good spirits and we have made sure we have stayed in touch with the players.
“We organised a players get together on Saturday and the whole squad turned up and we had a good chat with the lads about the current position and our aims for the rest of the season.”
Saturday will be a tough test for City. Newcastle are flying high in the Vodkat League Premier Division having won all 23o f their league fixtures to date.
The tie should have taken place at the beginning of January but was postponed due to a frozen pitch at the Lime Valley Stadium. Now though, as Gilbert prepares his troops for their first game of 2010, he is hoping to cause a cup upset.
He said:
“I hope Saturday’s game goes ahead so I can get it out of the way. The league is my main concern but, that said, we will prepare properly. Newcastle are on top form and it is going to be very, very hard to go there and get anything.
“Cup upsets happen, so lets hope we cause one on Saturday.”
