Whittington come out on top in close encounter at Cannock

Shazad Malik's 106 helps villagers to victory.

WHITTINGTON edged out Cannock 2nds by 17 runs in a tight encounter.

The villagers opted to send the hosts into the field first and soon set about posting a strong target.

Opener Shazad Malik was supported by Charlie Bennett (27) and Evan Hammond (68) as he made 106 to help Whittington end their innings on 275-7.

But Cannock were in no mood to roll over with the bat as Sam Easton's 80 and Jamie Hill's 54 helped them reach 223-5 with eight overs remaining.

The tail refused to wag though, as Whittington rattled through the rest of the order to bowl out the hosts for 258.

Muhammad Hassan was the pick of the visiting attack as he finished with figures of 4-58.
