Lichfield multi-storey car park has reopened after being closed for 11 months due to fears it could collapse.
The Birmingham Road site reopened to drivers yesterday (November 9) after work by Shenstone-based Makers Construction to make safe the deteriorating structure.
Work included repairing the car park’s concrete floor and ceiling slabs, strengthening the columns, waterproofing the top-deck and reinforcing some of the walls.
Councillor Margaret Stanhope, Cabinet Member for Democratic and Legal Services, said:
“I am delighted Birmingham Road multi storey car park is open in time for the Christmas rush. I know that visitors will once again find it a useful place to park, as it is convenient for the Three Spires Shopping Centre, city centre, Lichfield Garrick and beyond.”
As well as the safety work, cosmetic repairs have also been carried out including painting the internal walls white, creating wider parking bays and installing new pay and display machines.
Lichfield Shopmobility has also moved back to the multi-storey car park. To find out more telephone 07779333807 or visit www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/shopmobility.
What a waste of money refurbishing a run down car park insted of trying to get the friarsgate development up and running again. The car park has been closed for nearly a year and wasnt missed during last years Christmas rush as there is no decent companies in the centre!
As the cost is only due to the fact it has not been replaced by “FG” why are we paying for it?
The delay in “FG” has already seen the cost for the new police palace passed to us.
This car park is very handy for those who wish to park up and catch a bus to Burton or Derby, after all what is in Lichfield regarding shops? Take TJ Hughes out of Lichfield and it wouldn’t be worth going there.
