Councillors in Burntwood have drawn up plans to spend more than £750 on new civic chains.
The proposal would see Burntwood Town Council’s existing chairman’s chain expanded and a new “Consort’s Badge of Office” created for the civic leader’s partner.
A report to be heard at tonight’s meeting of the authority said: “An additional row for the chairman’s chain of office, comprising approximately 12 additional sterling silver badges with a gilded finish, including the necessary linkage to attach to the existing chain, would cost £250.
“The Consort’s Badge of Office on a neck chain can be purchased at a cost of approximately £530.”
But the plans have been criticised by Labour councillor Sue Woodward.
The move for the new civic chains come as Lichfield District Council is conducting a review into the value of civic roles.
“It is ridiculous that Burntwood Town Council is considering this,” Cllr Woodward said. “Especially at a time when the District Council has scrutinised civic function and recommended less spend on civic activities and expenditure relating to the chairman.
“This just seems to be about vanity rather than serving the town.”
I don’t normally agree with sue, but in this case she is bang on! What a total waste of money for nothing more than vanity!
For once just once do something useful
Beyond parody
We made the argument but it was voted through by the Conservative councillors.
Unbelievable, what a complete waste of money and dreadful example of Conservative councillors disconnect from the community
Absolute waste of money.
Don’t they know we’re going to have “refugees” to house, feed, educate, protect, paint doors, excuse behaviour, etc any time soon?
Wow! At least the Council Members have their priorities…..their decision beggars belief
