Report backs plan for new houses and apartments in Burntwood

A report has recommended giving the green light to a new housing development in Burntwood.

Bromford is hoping to create 14 apartments as part of its My Place project to help people with learning disabilities and mental health issues on land off Cannock Road, opposite the junction with New Street.

The development will also include 13 houses earmarked as “affordable” homes.

Burntwood Town Council had objected to the proposals, citing issues around parking as well as the loss of a public right of way.

But a report to Lichfield District Council’s planning committee has urged councillors to back the development of one bedroom apartments and two and three bedroom houses.

“The concerns of Burntwood Town Council and neighbours regarding parking provision are noted,” the report says. “However, the applicant submitted evidence to demonstrate that a reduced number of parking spaces were appropriate for the My Place apartments.

“This evidence was found to be acceptable by Staffordshire County Council Highways and no objections were raised.

“A pedestrian route through the site is not an adopted public right of way and the land is private property to which the landowner provides permission for the public to cross.

“There are currently signs along the route to emphasise that the footpath is used at the landowner’s discretion.”

The report added that the new homes would help tackle a shortage of properties.

“The development would create much needed affordable dwellings where there is a national shortage,” it explains.

A final decision will be made at the meeting of Lichfield District Council’s planning committee on April 9.
