A number of new taxi ranks could be introduced in Lichfield city centre.
Sites on Market Street, Tamworth Street and Sandford Street have been identified, while parking restrictions are set to be introduced on a current rank on Bore Street.
Lichfield District Council’s Regulatory and Licensing Committee is set to back the proposals when it meets on Thursday (November 28).
The new ranks – which would operate from 6pm to 9am – will add to existing provision on Station Road, The Friary and Birmingham Road and are designed to reduce anti-social behaviour as drinkers leave bars across the city at night.
A report to the committee said: “The desire of successive Local Police Commanders has been to have several small ranks throughout the City Centre.
“The purpose of this is for patrons leaving Licensed establishments to get straight into taxis and then home.”
Councillors will urge Staffordshire County Council to adopt the taxi rank on Bore Street and enforce it with parking restrictions.
Objections have already been raised by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service about private hire vehicles parking on the Bore Street/St John Street junction.
“Parking restrictions are proposed to prevent this as it is felt that the practice is dangerous and restricts access,” the report added.
“Illegal parking on the Bore Street rank could not [previously] be enforced because members had decided not to mark it as it was in the Conservation Area,” the report added.
“This problem was further exacerbated because fixed penalty notices could not be issued through the legislation used to create the rank.”
