A JEWELLERY collection has created a buzz after going under the hammer with a Lichfield auctioneer.
Split across 59 lots, the items fetched more than £56,400 in the Richard Winterton Auctioneers sale.
Insect brooches from the late 19th century formed a striking part of the treasure trove uncovered following a recent house clearance.
There were also numerous rings, chains, bracelets, pendants and watches from the same estate.
Lisa Spence, head of jewellery at Richard Winterton Auctioneers, said:
"Insect brooches originally became popular due to the Victorian obsession with natural history and are now highly coveted antiques.
"This stunning single owner collection included numerous designs such as a beetle, butterfly, bee and fly.
"As soon as it was announced the collection generated a real buzz and we had a huge amount of pre-sale interest.
"Bidding on the day was enthusiastic and fantastic hammer prices were achieved across the board."
Highlights included an early to mid 20th century bee insect brooch that sold for £1,900, a large late 19th century beetle brooch going for £1,250 and a gem set novelty tortoise brooch that fetched £1,200.
The sale comes as the firm prepares for a special two-day jewellery and watches valuation event at The Auction Cafe on Market Street in Lichfield from 9.30am to 3pm on 23rd and 24th June.
