A Lichfield paramedic has been commended for his work to help victims of the Ebola outbreak in Africa.
Gerard Kelly was one of the first West Midlands Ambulance Service staff who volunteered to travel to Sierra Leone in 2014.
He has now been honoured by as part of the service’s excellence awards.
A spokesperson said: “A group of NHS medical staff volunteered to make the journey to Sierra Leone to help in the fight against Ebola. They were part of a group of GPs, nurses and paramedics who have been through intensive training in the UK and travelled to West Africa to help treat people who have contracted the virus.
“Three paramedics from the West Midlands area initially stepped forward to join the first group to Africa at the end of 2014. We cannot underestimate the huge task they faced.
“They all deserve our fulsome praise.”
