A Barton man has been awarded a British Empire Medal.
Edward Sharkey received the honour in recognition of his services to the community.
He has served on Barton’s parish council since the 1980s and has also used his work as a landscape architect to help develop the village.
Mr Sharkey said: “I am obviously very pleased and proud to become a recipient of this award. To be selected is also quite humbling too, as I personally know of many other people in my village who have made great contributions to the life of our community and who have not had the good fortune to have been recognised.
“To anyone thinking of getting involved in any aspect of community service in the place where they live I’d say ‘go for it’ – you will find working with like-minded people is very fulfilling and you will always get so much more out than you ever put in.”
He received his award from the Lord Lieutenant Ian Dudson CBE CStJ on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.
