A bid to buy public toilets in Burntwood has been turned down.
Lichfield District Council received the offer for the Swan Island facilities after plans had been drawn up to cut the cost of looking after local authority-owned loos as part of the Fit for the Future proposals to plug a gap in the council’s finances.
But a report to a meeting of the council tonight (April 14) reveals that the decision had been made by Cllr Andrew Smith, cabinet member with responsibility for street cleaning and public toilets, to reject the bid.
“The Cabinet Member did not consider the sale a justified one as the cost of running it was minimal,” the report said.
“Members were pleased that the offer would be turned down as it was felt that the facility provided a service for those exiting buses as well as shoppers and elderly members of the community.”
