Abbots Bromley-based Freedom Brewery were one of 25 companies to feature in the Proud of British Beer film which highlights the dangers facing the UK’s drinks industry.

A copy of the video was sent to Michael Fabricant MP ahead of the budget yesterday (March 23) in a bid to raise awareness of the plight of pubs and breweries.

Susan Mayman, managing director of Freedom Brewery, said:

“We are proud to brew British beer, as are the other brewers from across the country who feature in this film. We hope that our message about beer duty is heard by MPs like  Michael Fabricant who have it in their power to stop the increases and with it the decimation of our industry.”

However, despite pressure from the Society of Independent Brewers – who are behind the film – Chancellor George Osborne outlined a 7.2 per cent rise in beer duty from midnight on Sunday, adding 4p to the price of a pint of beer.

But Mr Fabricant said he had raised the issues outlined by local brewers. He said:

“I have had a number of constituents write to me about this issue and I have duly written to the Chancellor about this.”
