A Burntwood councillor is appealing for community-minded people to volunteer to help neighbours beat the winter weather.
County councillor Sue Woodward is looking for a team of ‘Ice Busters’ to help keep pavements clear when the big chill arrives.
Her appeal comes as part of a Staffordshire-wide initiative to train local residents to clear snow and ice to support the work of the county’s highways teams.
“When the snow and ice arrive, as they surely will, many people are left stranded by icy pavements,” Cllr Woodward said. “The Highways team cannot get to every road and avenue in the area as their priority is to keep the main roads clear so this is about the community looking after the community.
“We want community-spirited people to get trained up in advance to help clear footpaths during bad weather, particularly those near older people’s housing.
“I think this is a really useful initiative which has been set up to good effect elsewhere in Staffordshire and I hope we can get a good group of volunteers together.”
