A terminally-ill Burntwood teenager’s fundraising efforts have topped the £1.5million mark.
Stephen Sutton’s story has gone around the globe after he posted about his battle with incurable cancer coming to an end.
Thanks to an effort involving more than 50,000 donations following online appeals from celebrities including Jason Manford, Piers Morgan, Jimmy Carr, Pixie Lott and Jonathan Ross, he reached his target of raising £1million for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
But the money has continued rolling in, with supporters now hoping to move the total towards £2million.
His Twitter account yesterday (April 23) revealed that he was overjoyed to have achieved the milestone.
“The whole situation is just breathtaking – in many ways,” he said.
“But seriously. Wow, just wow. Thank you all so much.”
Comedian Jason Manford has urged people to keep on raising money, launching a #thumbsupforStephen campaign to drive the total even higher.
“We managed to fulfil his dream of raising over £1million for the Teenage Cancer Trust,” the comic said. “But why are we stopping?
“We haven’t cured cancer, but we can help make the lives of thousands of teenagers who are dealing with cancer and those yet to be diagnosed a hell of a lot easier.
“He gave us a thumbs up. Let’s give him one back.”
People are being asked to post a selfie of themselves giving a thumbs up on Facebook and Twitter, together with the link to Stephen’s JustGiving page.
