Ambulances across Staffordshire and the West Midlands were called out every 30 seconds during one of their busiest nights of the year.
Figures released by West Midlands Ambulance Service revealed that 1,166 calls to 999 were received between 6pm yesterday (December 16) and 4am today.
Calls ranged from people who had been out celebrating and had been injured from trips, falls and altercations, to people who had been drinking and become unwell. There were also a number of assaults and serious traffic accidents.
With another busy night in prospect this evening as people celebrate the festive period, ambulance chiefs are urging people to take care.
West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman John Hawker said: “While we don’t wish to spoil anyone’s fun, we would ask that people go out and enjoy themselves this Christmas with the ultimate aim of getting home safely and uninjured with memories of a good night out.
“Unfortunately, a number of people find themselves being treated by paramedics and then in hospital with serious injuries or illness after a night out.
“Please don’t let this be your lasting memory of Christmas and New Year 2011.”
