More needs to be done to boost trade at markets in Lichfield and Burntwood, a candidate for the forthcoming General Election has said.
John Madden will stand as an independent candidate in the vote on 12th December.
As part of his campaign, the father of four has met with traders at the city centre market.
“After meeting the stallholders it’s clear that the markets in our area need investment,” he said.
“They say that trade is slack in terms of footfall and that new ideas are needed.”
Mr Madden said he believed specific actions could help support independent stallholders.
“I’d like to see the introduction of a training programme for market traders to market their point of sale to create a more modern feel,” he explained.
“We also need to think about extending the visitor economy into the evenings and nights, perhaps with special markets on Conduit Street with a road closure to encourage the likes of antique traders to the market.
“We should also be looking to do the same in Burntwood with special markets organised.
“Things like TV advertising about coming to Lichfield would help encourage visitors and support existing traders.”
