The Liberal Democrats have shown they are in good shape in Lichfield and Burntwood, the party’s General Election candidate has said.

Cllr Paul Ray finished third in the vote behind the Conservatives and Labour.

But the party saw its share of the vote climb from 5% two years ago to around 10% this time.

And for Cllr Ray, the result shows the party is developing a groundswell of local support.

“The Lib Dems got 10% of the vote in the Lichfield constituency on what was a difficult night [for the party nationally].

“We have taken a real step forward in 2019 with the election of seven new councillors in Lichfield and Burntwood at the local elections in May.

“The local party is in very good shape.”
