CHASETOWN suffered a defeat on the final day of the league season at Stalybridge Celtic.
There was little to separate the Scholars and their hosts in the first half as neither side created much in the way of clear-cut chances.
The highlight of the opening 45 was a long delay after an issue with one of the goals, leading to a lengthy period of stoppage time.
Stalybridge carved out a good opening in the additional minutes when Jack Irlam found Max Leonard, but his volley went over the bar.
Irlam then forced a good save out of Curtis Pond to prevent him opening the scoring from a free kick.
The second half saw Chasetown’s Sam Wilding fire a shot just over the top ten minutes after the restart.
But it was Stalybridge who broke the deadlock when Aaron Chalmers’ low cross allowed Irlam to find the net.
Pond had to be alert to prevent the lead being doubled as he kept out Andy Scarisbrick’s low shot.
The post also came to Chasetown’s rescue in the last minute when Benni Smales-Braithwaite saw Pond palm his effort onto the post.
The result means the Scholars finish tenth in the table.
