Chasetown’s Paul Sullivan was denied a last minute penalty, as Market Drayton edged a tight contest.
Drayton won it 2-1 to reverse an opening day 3-0 defeat against the Scholars.
And Lee Ebin’s men took the lead after only 10 minutes through captain Paul McMullen.
McMullen was allowed the freedom of the penalty area to head home from close range.
An unchanged Chasetown side got stronger as the half wore on, as Danny Bragoli’s shot was blocked by Damien Stevenson in front of his goalkeeper.
Bragoli was again denied by Stevens after some neat build up play between Chris Slater and Andy Westwood.
Manager Craig Harris’ double substitution on 63 minutes almost had an instant impact.
Danny Smith on his 350th Scholars appearance rattled the crossbar with a right footer that had Stevens beaten.
However, the visitors were dealt a cruel blow as Drayton increased their lead against the run of play.
Rob Stevenson raced past Louis Keenan and his cut back from the byline found Yannick Makota, who made no mistake.
But Chasetown got back into the match six minutes from time, when Nick Wellecomme’s drilled ball found Ramone Stephens. He netted at the far post to give the visitors hope.
And in stoppage time Chasetown were denied a penalty, as they felt Sullivan was tripped inside the box.
The referee Mr Hobday checked with his linesman but awarded a free kick, which ended the Scholars fightback as Drayton clung on.
