Work is finally set to begin on a new skatepark in Lichfield.
The Beacon Park facility could be in place by the new year if Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet signs off the deal for it to be built by specialists Gravity Engineering.
The £145,000 project is being funded by grants from Veolia Environmental Trust, the Safer Communities Partnership and Staffordshire County Council Local Member Funds together with Section 106 money.
The deal with Gravity to build the skatepark is expected to be agreed by the local authority’s Cabinet at a meeting this evening (October 1).
The proposed facility had been at the centre of a row, with the Lichfield Skatepark Association hoping to build a larger venue, costing around £350,000.
But a report to be considered to Cabinet has warned against further delays.
“Not appointing a contractor at this time would jeopardise the funding offers in place,” it explained.
“There has been extensive consultation with regards to the development of a skatepark in Lichfield.
“Our plans have been supported by local young skaters, including those calling themselves the Friends of Michael Patterson.”
If the contract gets the go-ahead, work is expected to start this month and be completed within 12 weeks.
