The leader of Lichfield District Council has said he is keeping the issue of the new railings around Minster Pool “under review”.
His comments follow criticism that the new fencing is damaging the view of Lichfield Cathedral.
However, he has insisted the work – which is part of the Historic Parks Project – must go ahead to allow other parts of the development to go ahead.
Cllr Mike Wilcox wrote on his blog:
“I’ve been talking to lots of local people about he new railings, and I know how passionately some people feel about them. Whilst we’re confident the railings will be more in keeping with the historic area, once painted black and when the new pathway has been laid, we’re happy to keep it under review.
“That said, we need to progress with the project as planned, otherwise other elements of the scheme could face delays.
“Throughout Lichfield Historic Parks project, we’ve worked hard to get people’s views to make sure the designs are right for the city.”
And despite the initial backlash about the new railings, Cllr Wilcox has urged residents to take a balanced view once all of the associated works have been completed.
He added:
“We hope people will be understanding, reserve judgement, and keep an open mind until the project has been completed, when we can look at this again, bearing in mind the costs involved.”
