Plans to restore a canal in Lichfield have been boosted by the news that land will be transferred to allow the project to continue.
A full meeting of Lichfield District Council on Tuesday (September 30) will hear recommendations to allow the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust to take on land at Darnford Park.
The agreement will see the Trust pay a “peppercorn rent” as the local authority looks to offload assets as part of cuts under the Fit for the Future programme.
A report to the council meeting says: “The District Valuer had suggested that the land at Darnford Park could be worth £10,000 but that the council might consider a transfer at a peppercorn rent to enable the canal to be restored sooner.”
However, the council will also recommend that the land be transferred back if the canal restoration project does not go ahead.
