Michael Fabricant was dining at a restaurant in Lyme Regis when an error with the billing almost ended with him forking out for the huge sum.

The mistaken bill was a whopping £732,379.04.

He revealed the pricey portions to his Twitter followers, saying: “My credit card company queried the cost of my dinner and refused to authorise it. Glad it did!”

Mr Fabricant told LichfieldLive that he was talking to someone while entering his pin and hadn’t realised the amount he was trying to pay.

“The waitress said the card company had rejected the payments which was a little embarrassing,” he said. “When the slip showing the cancelled transaction was printed and I saw what was on it that the embarrassment switched to the poor waitress.”
