Gritters working round the clock to keep Lichfield and Burntwood roads clear

Highways bosses say gritting teams have been working round the clock to keep roads in Lichfield and Burntwood clear.

Snow and ice were causing havoc on some roads, but Staffordshire County Council said all 40 of its fleet of gritters and snow ploughs were deployed overnight and into today.

Highways cheif Mark Deaville said: “The snow came down thick and fast yesterday and earlier than forecast.

“Our gritting teams and snow ploughs have been working hard to clear roads and make our main routes accessible. It has been pretty much all hands to the pump and they are still working hard now.

“We are asking people to avoid travelling if they can and to drive with extreme caution if they need to.

“People can be assured that while the cold weather lasts, our teams will be out.”
