Lichfield rolled back the years as a celebratory Diamond Jubilee banner recreated part of the city’s celebrations during Queen Victoria’s landmark year.
A historic photo from 1897 showed a banner reading ‘Revered Beloved’ either side of an image of the Queen.
And Lichfield City Council produced a 2012 version to mark Her Majesty’s celebration outside the Guildhall.
“The banner appears in a famous old photograph of the Guildhall”, said town clerk Peter Young. “Surprisingly little has changed over the last 115 years, although the ground floor window was replaced by a door when the Guildhall became the fire station, and that door still remains even though it is no longer used.”
The 1897 banner was lit by gas lamps, with a gas pipe running from the lamp standard. The celebrations included a free concert, free tea for schoolchildren and a Grand Military tattoo.
