The Labour candidate for the 2019 General Election says it is a “dream come true” to represent the party across Lichfield and Burntwood.
Dave Robertson has been selected to contest the constituency in the 12th December vote.
Having been part of campaigns to protect school crossing patrols in Staffordshire and save the Friary Grange Leisure Centre from closure, the party is hoping a return to a local candidate will reap dividends at the ballot box.
And the Lichfield City Council and Lichfield District Council member admitted he was over the moon to be heading out on the campaign trail.
“I am so proud to be selected as the Labour candidate for Lichfield,” he said.
“I’ve lived here for almost my entire life and have been very lucky to benefit from all the great things that the local area has to offer.
“To have the opportunity to support communities and businesses in Lichfield, Burntwood and the villages, is a dream come true.
“I look forward to campaigning across the constituency and to spreading Labour’s message of hope and that a more equal society is possible.”
Cllr Robertson grew up in the city, before studying for a physics degree at the University of Liverpool and a PGCE from the University of Birmingham.
After teaching for a decade, he went on to work for a national teachers’ trade union.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “Through his work as a teacher Dave saw, first-hand, the impact of austerity on children and young people which was his reason for first joining the Labour party and for his work to support the community in our local area.”
He will be joined on the ballot paper by Conservative candidate Michael Fabricant and Lib Dem hopeful Cllr Paul Ray. Neither the Brexit Party of the Green Party has yet confirmed if they will field a candidate in Lichfield.
