Children in Lichfield and Burntwood are being urged to pick up a book to keep boredom at bay during the school holidays.
Libraries across Staffordshire are taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge which aims to see youngsters get through six books during the holidays.
Last year saw 12,580 children sign up and the organisers are keen to smash that record this year.
County Councillor Pat Corfield said:
“The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic initiative that encourages children to broaden their horizons and hone their literature skills even when the school year is over.
“It’s also great for moms and dads as it provides a free source of entertainment, which is particular important in today’s challenging financial times, and is educational. It is a win, win situation for young people, their parents and the library service.”
There is also a dedicated website to the Summer Reading Challenge called Circus Stars which can be found at www.circus-stars.org.uk where young people can find a range of activities and games.
The Summer Reading Challenge, aimed at children aged four-11, is in its thirteenth year and is expected to attract around 760,000 young people nationally.
It kicks off on July 16 and runs until September 10. Children can sign up to the challenge at their local library and will receive a free starter pack.
