The leader of the District Council’s Labour Group has welcomed the news that the Olympic Torch will be carried through the area on its way to the 2012 Olympics in London.
Cllr Steve Norman congratulated council officers who have been working to persuade the route organisers to include Lichfield in the relay.
It will visit Lichfield before heading to Tamworth on June 30.
“I think the sight of the torch being borne through the National Arboretum and in Cathedral Close in the city will be irresistible for global TV editors,” he said.
“It should be a boost for our area and I congratulate the work done by our staff at Lichfield District Council.”
Councillor Norman also said that he was pleased that the torch will be in the district on the 30th of June and in St Peter Port, Guernsey on July 15 as that’s where his stepson Joe, a former Chase Terrace High School pupil, now lives and works.
