Visitors to Lichfield Library are being reassured that it will remain open while a diseased tree outside the building is removed.

The large beech tree at the rear of the library has an incurable fungal infection and needs to be removed.

Plans are in place for it to be replaced, possibly with a sweet chestnut or walnut, after the removal takes place over the next few weeks.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for culture, communities and customers Pat Corfield said: “We’re pleased to confirm that the library will remain open during its normal hours while work to remove the tree takes place.

“It’s unfortunate that the tree cannot be saved, but we will not have people’s safety put at risk.”
