Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant spoken of the modern day meaning of Remembrance Sunday and the need to remember troops losing their lives in current conflicts.
His comments came as he addressed a gathering after the Burntwood Uniformed Youth’s Armistice Parade on Sunday (November 8).
Mr Fabricant spoke following the service taken by the Reverend Margaret Mattocks and said:
“We must not forget that we are no longer only commemorating those dead from two great world wars but those who are dying now in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
After asking the young uniformed marchers present how many have visited he Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, he continued:
“Sixteen thousand names are carved into the walls of that Memorial of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Royal Marines who have died since the Second World War. And the saddest thing to me is that space for a further 15,000 names for those who will die in future wars has had to be added.
“The fighting and the deaths never end. And we will remember them.”
