Lichfield’s MP has teamed up with his Tamworth counterpart to salute the work of a military unit serving overseas.

A fundraising campaing has been launched to raise money for members of the 3rd Batallion of the Mercian Regiment – the Staffords – who are currently on a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The Lichfield MP said:

“I am really pleased to back fundraising efforts which support the serving soldiers of today and which keep alive the history of a famous regiment.  The Staffords were first raised in the Kings Head pub in Lichfield and their regimental museum is in Whittington.”

Mr Pincher added:

“When I first heard that my constituents Paul and Debbie Mason from Fazeley had launched this campaign I got in touch with them to ask how we could help.  I met with Paul and Debbie and we agreed that publicising their efforts in Parliament was a good way to help their charitable campaign.

“Their son Luke is currently serving with the Regiment in Afghanistan. I am sure he will be very proud to see what his mum and dad have done.”

The Staffords were merged with two other regiments, the Cheshire regiment and the Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters, in 2007 to form the new Mercian regiment.

For more information or to order Staffords mugs or t-shirts email Paul Mason on mailto:tshirts@3mercian.co.uk or call 01827 283 027.  People can also write to 63 Brookend, Fazeley, Tamworth, B78 3RS.
