Rocks installed at a Lichfield park could be taken out – just months after they were put in at a cost of £21,000.
The controversial boulders were put in place by Lichfield District Council as part of the revamp of the Beacon Park play area.
The project made national headlines after criticism from parents and the full cost of the rocks being installed was released following a Freedom of Information request by a city resident.
But the council now admits some of them could be taken out of the play area after they began crumbling. Those at risk of removal have already been marked with a cross by workers.
Councillor Val Richards, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said:
“We have marked all the rocks with a cross that we have rejected because they are breaking up. We are still deciding whether to replace or remove them.”
The council did not comment on whether an investigation had been launched into the planning and installation of the boulders.
