Lichfield firefighters will be reminding shoppers to carry out regular tests on their smoke alarms as they launch their annual Push the Button Day.
The campaign by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was launched last year after figures revealed that although nine out of ten households have smoke alarms, seven out of ten don’t test them.
To help drive home the message, firefighters will be at the city’s Argos store in the Three Spires Shopping Centre between 10am and 4pm tomorrow (October 13) to hand out Push the Button freebies.
The campaign video which proved to be an online hit last year will also be playing on the shop’s TV screens.
Lichfield Area Commander Phil McFarlane said: “The video was an instant hit on our website and YouTube last year and the viewing numbers are still rising on a regular basis.
“This year we want to build on this message by asking members of the public ‘how will you remember?’ in an attempt to encourage weekly smoke alarm testing to become part of people’s weekly routine.
“In my house my kids have the responsibility of making sure our smoke alarms work, once they’ve checked it bleeps each week, they get their pocket money. We want to ensure that people are always as safe as possible from fire in their own homes.”
