A Lichfield nature reserve is being given a £100,000 boost.
CChristian Fields, which is off Eastern Avenue, will benefit after the introduction of the Creating Lichfield’s Community Nature Reserve project.
The initiative includes a series of improvement works that will boost the site’s biodiversity and make it an even more attractive place to visit.
The project kicked off last October and work is already underway to create new footpaths across the site, an outdoor classroom, a pond, a dipping platform and a boardwalk. Upcoming works include installing carved wooden sculptures, information boards, picnic benches, as well as creating wetland and woodland areas, wildflower meadows and more.
Councillor Alan White said: “It is great to see work progressing at Christian Fields. It really is going to be a fantastic place to visit to enjoy a tranquil space and all the wildlife it will be home to.
“This project is a huge group effort, and wouldn’t be happening without the support of our many partner organisations and volunteers.
“In the spring, we’ll be getting local children involved in elements of the project, such as the bird boxes and wildflower meadows, through working with local schools and Scout and Brownie groups.
“We’re all looking forward to seeing the finished result and launching the new and improved Local Nature Reserve later in the summer.”
The £100,000 project is being funded by £45,000 section 106 money, £20,000 from Staffordshire Environmental Fund, £25,000 from Lichfield District Council and the Countryside & Parks Conservation Group and £10,000 in a number of small grants.
