Part of Lichfield’s Beacon Park has closed so that work can begin on a multi-million pound restoration scheme.
The enclosed toddler play area is being moved and replaced with a new playground, complete with three covered sandpits, a maze and balance beams.
Children’s favourites, such as the train and the springers, will be restored and moved into the new play area, which will be surrounded by willow fencing.
Councillor Val Richards, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said:
“We know that children will miss their playground while the new one takes shape, but we’re confident they will love their new and improved play area. We have worked hard to find out what equipment local children and families want for their new playground, and we are all looking forward to opening it later this summer.”
The older children’s play area will also be closing in April. This is so the whole area can be transformed into an open play area for children of all ages.
Youngsters will also be able to race around the revamped mini car track, clamber over a sculpted wood climbing tree and play on on rope swings.
Other facilities such as the basketball court, rocking horse and funnel slide are also due to undergo a restoration.
Cllr Neil Roberts, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Development Services, said:
“Providing brilliant play areas for children of all ages is a key part of the multi million pound programme to improve and restore our historic parks. This is why creating the new play area is one of the first phases in the works, and we are delighted to see the start of these exciting plans.”
