LICHFIELD'S MP has brought together stakeholders in a bid to tackle "continued failure" by Royal Mail to meet delivery targets and improve local services.
Dave Robertson was joined by other MPs from constituencies facing similar issues, along with Ofcom chief executive Melanie Dawes and representatives of the Communication Workers Union (CWU).
The meeting heard about the impact delivery failures were having on local communities.
Concerns were also raised about whether the current system of enforcement is delivering the improvements customers expect – and whether Ofcom has been effective in holding Royal Mail to account.
Mr Robertson said:
"Constituents deserve a reliable postal service. Too many people are missing vital letters because Royal Mail simply isn’t delivering them on time.
"Royal Mail has been fined millions of pounds for repeatedly missing its delivery targets, yet performance continues to fall short. That raises serious questions about whether the current approach is driving the change that people need to see.
"I made clear to Ofcom that if financial penalties alone are not changing behaviour, the regulator must consider whether it has the right tools and powers to hold Royal Mail to account effectively."
As Ofcom continues its investigation into Royal Mail's performance, MPs also highlighted frustrations with the level of engagement many parliamentary offices receive when attempting to resolve delivery issues on behalf of constituents.
The regulator also agreed to raise these concerns directly with the company.
Royal Mail has also committed to meeting with MPs in Parliament to discuss ongoing service issues and potential improvements.
